Hyundai finally jumped into the hot hatch game (the first gen Veloster Turbo was lukewarm) with the long awaited Veloster N. Here’s the price breakdown.

Kinja'd!!!

We all know that Hyundai packs in the value. If I listed all the standard features this thing comes with, this would be longer than it needs to be. But the main standout features it comes with are:

2.0 turbocharged 250 horse I4

18” wheels

6 speed manual with rev matching

Electronically controlled suspension

LED projector headlights

Large bore exhaust

There are 4 exterior color choices: Chalk White, Performance Blue, Racing Red, Phantom Black. One interior color choice is available as well. Black of course. All exterior colors, save for Racing Red, come with the lower front and sides of the car trimmed in red.. All colors are no cost options of course. I do wish red was interior color option as well.

Kinja'd!!!

Again, Hyundai packs in the value, and there is only one option package. Its a $2,100 Performance Package. It consists of:

N Corner Carving Differential with LSD

Variable exhaust valve system

19” wheels with Pirelli P Zero tires

A power bump to 275 horses

13.5” front and 12.3” rear ventilated brakes.

There are only 3 accessories as well: wheel locks, a cargo tray and rear bumper applique. I added none of these.

All in, a Veloster N will set you back just under $30 grand. $29,885. At this price, it outpowers the GTi both with and with and without the Performance Package and actually closes in on the WRX power wise. This thing should be a performance steal.

If I can get it in yellow or purple or maybe a bright orange or green, I’m jumping in on it.

You’d think there’d be funkier colors, but nope.

The closest you’ll get is that new N line for the Elantra (i30) Sport. This should be just as good though.

I’m curious to see if Thomas Schemera can institute some success at Hyundai N. History says most likely, but people underestimate how good Hyundai’s are  simply based on the “brand” factor.

that being said, $30k for a 275 hp turbocharged i4 and 6 speed? If it has some tuning capabilities, this could be pound for pound the best hot hatch in the battle, especially at that price point.

There’ s like .7 inches of difference between the 2. So other than the addition of actual doors on the Elantra, there wouldn’t be much difference between the 2. In fact, the rear seat room in the Elantra GT is the main knock against it compared to it competition.

You’re exactly right. People underestimate Hyundai/Kia a lot. This thing will slay anything above its weight class if the i30N is any indication. Not only that, I’m pretty sure you’ll be able to get probably over 350 horses out of it when the tuners get their hands on it.

Neat addition to the American market.

The Type R though is still king. I realize this video is i30N (and Megane RS) but the i30N is close to the V eloster N

T his will be great performance wise and will be up there in lap times of the affordable bunch, especially the 275hp motor. The obvious problem though is your still paying close to $30k for a 3 door hatch Hyundai.

Hyundai still has a brand identity problem and maybe this will help but IMO this should have been in Kia’s court. M aybe a 4 door Forte GT or something that p airs as a s ide kick to the $39k Stinger GT.

Even though this has 3 doors, this is not a people/cargo friendly car. And while 95% of the time its 1 person traveling, people always are wanting passenger space and cargo area.   Honda made the Type R a 4 door hatch for a reason. I can’t find sales numbers but I bet the lower to similar priced Civic Si sells sedans vs coupes 2 to 1. Also on why there is no more 2 door GTI “’ The trend is clearly shifting toward four-door models’ said Volkswagen of America’s marketing chief, Hendrik Muth.”

Dont get me wrong, I hope this does well and persuades Hyundai/Kia to bring more performance to their line up. What I am saying it is an uphill fight and I hope it doesn’t do the opposite and have the Koreans shy away from performance.

I’m not really feeling the aesthetics of the new Veloster, but I’m glad that the variety is there in the hot hatch segment.

Come on people , buy the hell out of those manuals!

I totally agree. Hyundai seemed to have ditched their plans for Kia sporty, Hyundai entry level/near lux. This whole N think should have went to Kia, who, according to recent reports, seems to be settling on a GT line in the same vein as the N Line, rather than a full on in house performance division.

You hit an unfortunately truth too: this thing is a niche. We all want it to succeed. But the fact of of the matter is this thing is a 3 door hatch with a back seat no bigger than a coupe. Its not selling to families and will probably struggle to be a daily driver. It would have made more sense to give the us the i30 N, even though its not much bigger in the back.

Its definitely more handsome than the 1st gen. But I’m glad it didn’ t turn into a crossover based on the Veloster.

The i30/Elantra GT has way more visibility and cargo room though. The Veloster is positively claustrophobic when you look behind you. Meanwhile the  i30 N has an optional pano roof in some markets like Australia. Plus people can get in the back seat from both sides of the car. I really want to like the Veloster N but to me the best part of a hot hatch is the dual roles of fun & practicality in one car.

Exactly. I test drove the new Veloster one day I was getting an oil change and it had as bad blind spots as my old Sonic. We really should have gotten the Elantra GT as an N model. Its more practical. We will just have to wait and see who bites.

Still though with the i30 N, it follows the current size and hatch style used by VW, Ford, and Mazda . Though still not 100% on what Honda thinks is a hatchback .

I won’t contend the N is great value, but I will readily fight and argue that the Type R is even better value.

It offers about 40 more HP, 30 more lb.ft of torque for ~ $4 ,800 more. Among other things, the Civic also stops at 99ft from 60mph, vs the N at 111ft. The Honda also only weighs 30 more pounds, but it beats the Hyundai 10.1 to 11.1 lb/bhp.

Sorry dude, I can’t agree with your assessment

Its a questionable value due to the greediness of the dealers . And that is if you could find it even near MSRP. You can with the Veloster N from what i’ve seen. No markups. And you can do a whole lot tuning with he money saved from not paying for those mark ups on the Type R.

At this point though the competition is closing in. Well what little competition there is left in the hot hatch field. The GTi is the 3 Series of the hot hatch world. And everyone is catching up and getting too good not to ignore.

The biggest problem with the Veloster, is that it’s not really much of a hatch. It’s too coupe-like in size and profile. It loses in practicality to every other car in the segment. I loved the practicality of my Golf R, and I know the Veloster can’t hold a candle to it.

Kinja'd!!! LJ909 > Jeep Guy

True but then you’d have to deal with the trash ride of the RS and potential head gasket issues. But I would honestly get an RS over this too. Cant beat the warranty though.

Smaller and less practical   than both - will be interesting to see how it does in the market.

Specs might look good on paper, but I would like to see how the competitors actually match up to the GTI in the real world.  I have driven a lot of cars in this segment and few come close to matching the handling of the GTI.

I wouldn’ t discount the Veloster N at this point, especially with the former head of BMW M at the helm. It might not handle as good but I think it’ll come too close to ignore.

And I’m here to tell you how wrong you are. I’ve owned a MK7 GTI. I currently own a MK7 Golf R. The Veloster N is a lot better driver’s car and it’s not even close. After test driving the N last week at the dealer, I literally didn’t want to get out of the car, and driving my R home made me sad because it felt lifeless in comparison. And the one I tested didn’t even have the Performance Package(thus why I didn’t buy it on the spot).

Frankly , I’ve never fallen  for a car so quickly on a test drive. Anyone looking for a hot hatch would be an absolutely fool to dismiss the N.

The gearshift action is much more tactile than a GTI imo. I got to play around with the N at the Detroit auto show. You actually feel like you are doing something in the N vs the GTI which fells like a video game when it comes to all the controls: pedels, steering, gearshiter.

IKR. I don’t particularly like the MK7 GTI, it’s a perfect compromise but it’s a compromise at the end of the day. T he light controls really pissed me off. Like a 987 Cayman S that I drove had light controls as well but the shifter was just the perfect amount of notchy and the steering weighed up perfectly as well. Even my Mini does all these  things, so its not that it can’t be done for $30k.
